Manchester City 4-3 Tottenham (4-4 agg): Pep Guardiola questions VAR over Fernando Llorente ‘handball’

Pep Guardiola has questioned the angle used to review Fernando Llorente’s decisive goal which knocked Manchester City out of the Champions League.

On an extraordinary night, Spurs edged out City on away goals after the quarter-final tie ended 4-4 on aggregate following City’s thrilling 4-3 win.

Despite five goals in the opening 21 minutes, the two crucial moments came in the final 20 minutes of the game courtesy of VAR.

Llorente’s goal was allowed to stand after referee Cuneyt Cakir checked whether the striker handled the ball before it bundled in off the Spaniard’s hip.

City thought they had pulled off a miraculous victory when Raheem Sterling netted in stoppage-time, but the strike was dramatically chalked off when replays showed Sergio Aguero was marginally offside in the build up.

Guardiola’s adulation quickly turned to despair, and while the Spaniard had no complaints about the offside decision, he argued that the wrong angle was used to assess Llorente’s ‘handball’.

“I support VAR,” the City boss said. “It is just to see the goal maybe from Llorente’s handball. From one angle, it is handball. From another, it is not.

“I am for fair football. When it is offside, it is offside. I think in the future, even in the present it will be fair.”

On Sterling’s goal being ruled out, he added: “I don’t know, I saw the action and the people decide it is offside, it is offside. What can I say?”
