Wolves have had a magnificent return to the Premier League

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men smashed their previous Premier League points record (40) with nine matches remaining – since 2001, no newly-promoted club has finished in a higher position than 8th.

And now, as the season edges towards it conclusion, many are suggesting the Molineux chief should be crowned manager of the year.

In light of Wolves’ stellar campaign, talkSPORT.com has taken a look at other teams who have endured similarly brilliant returns to the Premier League since it started in 1992.

Blackburn were promoted to the Premier League for its inaugural season and it proved to be a brilliant campaign for the blue and white outfit.

Owner Jack Walker splashed the cash in the summer, signing Alan Shearer for £3.5m, who went onto score 16 goals in 21 matches before his season was ended with a knee injury.

Manager: Peter Reid

Final position: 7th

Kevin Phillips scored an astonishing 30 goals in his first season in the top-flight and claimed the European Golden Shoe as the Black Cats secured a seventh place finish in the Premier League.

Reid’s men were unfortunate to miss out on European football, with their goal difference not good enough to qualify for the UEFA cup.

Curbishley led Charlton to a great return in the top-flight

Total points: 52

Manager: Alan Curbishley

Total points: 55

Manager: Alan Pardew

Final position: 9th

The Hammers scraped their way to the Premier League through the play-offs and many largely expected them to go straight back down.

However, at the end of October they were fourth and enjoying a superb season. They might have won an FA Cup too if it wasn’t for some heroics from Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard.

Reading have had three seasons in the Premier League and in two of them they were relegated.

However, the Royals performed brilliantly with Steve Sidwell starring throughout to finish in eighth place – and they would have qualified for Europe had they not drawn their last match.

I see, week-in week-out, kids sitting around me bored to their back teeth because the football we play is so dull. The way things are going, we won't need a new stadium because we won't be able to fill it. The days when kids chose to support Everton are slipping away
