Man arrested after social media threats to bomb Fratton Park and kill fans during Portsmouth vs Sunderland

Police have confirmed they’ve arrested a man in relation to threats made on social media to bomb Fratton Park and kill fans during Portsmouth’s League One play-off semi-final against Sunderland.

Portsmouth earlier said they will carry out enhanced security checks before the clash due to the threats, which were posted on the Twitter account of @Kieran30971361.

The threats referenced the Manchester Arena bombing which killed 23 people in May 2017.

“I wounder (sic) how many Portsmouth fans I can shoot everyone remember the Manchester arena bombing just imagine fratton park going bang well let’s find out tomorrow,” read the initial post.

Portsmouth said they were aware of the posts and working with Hampshire Constabulary, who have since confirmed a Yorkshire man has been arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill.

“A man was arrested overnight after threats were put out on social media about tonight’s Portsmouth V Sunderland game at Fratton Park,” Hampshire Constabulary said in a statement.

“We continue to work with Portsmouth FC and can assure the public that a sufficient policing response will be in place for tonight’s match.”

The Twitter account has since been suspended.

“The club would like to reassure fans that there will be enhanced security checks in place for Thursday’s play-off match against Sunderland at Fratton Park,” a club statement read.
