Netherlands vs England: Harry Kane insists Liverpool and Tottenham stars will put rivalry aside for Nations League

Harry Kane says the Champions League final will be forgotten when Liverpool and Tottenham stars link up with the rest of the England squad for the Nations League.

The Three Lions face the Netherlands in the semi-finals on Thursday – a game you can listen to LIVE on talkSPORT – just five days after the Reds beat Spurs 2-0 in Madrid.

England boss Gareth Southgate has seen his preparations scuppered by domestic finals, meaning the seven players involved in Saturday’s showpiece will not train with the national team until Tuesday.

Jordan Henderson lifted the famous trophy alongside Liverpool team-mates Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez, as defeated Spurs players Eric Dier, Danny Rose, Dele Alli and Kane watched on at the Wanda Metropolitano.

But Kane insists club matters will be put to one side as England look to end their long trophy drought.

“We’ve got such a great bond and, although we’re at different clubs, when we come here everyone’s fully focused on here,” the England captain said.

“You don’t have to talk to people about switching off from club football.

“Everyone just naturally does it and I think the fact we’ve played with each other in club sides and younger England sides (means) we’re all good friends.

“Whether you’re at Spurs or (Manchester) City or Liverpool, we’ve known each other long enough that we’ve become mates.

“When you come here, you just look forward to meeting up and being friends.”

Kane could come up against Virgil van Dijk for the second time in five days when the two countries meet in Portugal.

And Tony Cascarino, writing in his column for the Times, says Van Dijk would be delighted if Kane starts.

“Kane was way off the pace and had no impact,” he said.

“It would have been crazy to leave out [Lucas] Moura, who scored a hat-trick in the semi-final, for Kane even if he had been fully fit, which he wasn’t.

“It will be very interesting to see whether Gareth Southgate starts Kane in the Nations League semi-final on Thursday, especially as he will be up against Van Dijk again.

“Van Dijk will be thinking that he could have another easy night if Kane starts for England.”
