England defender Danny Rose has acknowledged that Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate has a ‘nice guy persona’ – but insists he is ‘ruthless’ when he needs to be.
The Tottenham defender says a prime example of that approach was when Southgate left Manchester United’s Luke Shaw out of his squad for the upcoming Nations League finals.
Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, he said: “He has this nice guy persona and don’t get me wrong that is true, and I can’t speak highly enough of him.
“But he is ruthless at the same time. You may have seen that by leaving Luke Shaw out of the recent [Nations League] squad.
“He’s said that me and Ben [Chilwell] have both been playing really well and deserved the call-up and I agree with him.
“Luke’s had a great season too though and I hope it continues to go well for him, as that’s only going to push me and Ben to do the same.
“Ultimately it’s going to be great for the country if the three of us are pushing each other every step of the way.”
Rose, who admitted in the interview that he was left ’embarrassed’ and ‘angry’ after a unnamed club asked to know if he was ‘crazy’, revealed that Southgate’s No 2 Steve Holland is the more ‘vocal’ out of the pair on the training ground.

He added: “Steve Holland is probably more vocal in terms of if you’re not doing something right – he’ll pull you up straight away.
“The gaffer sees everything. He’s very meticulous. He’ll pull you to one side if he doesn’t like what he’s seeing and he’ll tell you what he expects from you.”
A little under two hours later the Red Devils were celebrating another famous away European triumph, coming away from the French capital with a 3-1 victory to progress through on away goals. United also travelled to Juventus in the group stage and won 2-1 through a late Juan Mata goal and an own goal from Leonardo Bonucci.
