Liverpool vs Tottenham: When Kenny Dalglish and John Barnes played for Spurs

Liverpool play Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon in what could be a pivotal match in the Premier League title race.

A win for Spurs could derail the Reds’ bid for glory as they aim for their first league win since 1990.

In recent years the two clubs have built up a simmering rivals too, fuelled by social media and two goalscoring stars in Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah who are once again locked in the fight to win the Golden Boot.

Meanwhile, a fraught and fractious 2-2 draw between the sides last February also raised tensions with the Anfield faithful feeling conned out of a victory, despite correctly awarded penalties to Spurs.

But it hasn’t always been like this and once the relationship was on such good terms Liverpool allowed key stars Kenny Dalglish and John Barnes to play for Tottenham.

Danny Thomas joined Tottenham in 1983 after excelling with Coventry City, £250,000 the price agreed on for the right-back, just as he made his debut for England.

He made two appearances for the Three Lions’ senior side on a tour of Australia, and would return to star for Spurs on their way to winning the 1983/84 UEFA Cup, although it was Thomas who was the only man to miss for Spurs in the 4-3 shoot-out win against Anderlecht after two 1-1 draws.

His career, though, was cut short in March 1987 when a tackle from Queens Park Rangers player Gavin Maguire cruelly ended his career.

A year later Tottenham held a benefit match for their retired star to help fund his change of career.

They took on Manchester United on March 28, 1988 with Kenny Dalglish, into his third season as manager but still playing the odd match, and John Barnes taking to the pitch at White Hart Lane for the hosts.

Unfortunately, the duo couldn’t stop Spurs losing to a Man United side led by Sir Alex Ferguson as they succumbed to a 3-2 defeat, despite goals from Steve Hodge and Steve Archibald.
