He also took Chelsea to the Carabao Cup final, but they were beaten by Manchester City on penalties and despite this, Roman Abramovich is set to wield the axe once more.

The 60-year-old has endured a difficult debut season in England with his football coming under-fire from Chelsea fans and Abramovich is concerned by Sarri’s relationship with the Stamford Bridge faithful who have made their feelings known on a number of occasions.

Lampard is a Chelsea legend and his appointment would be welcome news, having made 648 appearances for the Blues and he is the club’s all-time leading scorer with 211 goals.

He left Chelsea in 2014, going on to play for Manchester City, before enjoying a two-year stint in America with New York City FC.
