Ajax vs Tottenham: Tim Sherwood says Spurs are ‘playing against their feeder club’ and responds to shock Mauricio Pochettino comments

Tim Sherwood has branded Ajax ‘Tottenham’s feeder club’, saying Spurs should have no problem seeing off the Dutch giants and progressing to their first ever European Cup final.

Tottenham will be hoping to emulate Liverpool after their stunning semi-final comeback against Barcelona, when they take on Ajax in Amsterdam on Wednesday night live on talkSPORT.

Like the Reds, Spurs trail the tie going into the second-leg, but a 1-0 deficit presents a seemingly simpler task as they aim to make it an all-Premier League final.

On Tuesday, manager Mauricio Pochettino stunned supporters with his comments in his pre-match press conference.

The Argentine, who has been linked with the Manchester United and Real Madrid jobs, suggested he could leave the club if Spurs are crowned European champions.

Mauricio Pochettino's press conference comments

“To win in these circumstances this season, maybe I need to think about maybe doing something different in the future.

“Winning the Champions League? It should be fantastic, no? Close the five-year chapter and go home.

“We are living a dream. Five years ago, when we arrived, [the aim] was to reduce the gap to the top four, and then to have the possibility to play in the Champions League.

“Nobody would believe we would be playing in the Champions League three seasons in a row and competing at this stage.”

Sherwood believes the manager’s comments were tough-in-cheek, but disagreed with the suggestion that it would be a shock event if Spurs win the Champions League.

In fact, he believes the opposite – that Tottenham are massive favourites to beat Ajax and make it through to face Liverpool in Madrid.

Speaking on Wednesday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the former Spurs player and manager said: “I think Pochettino is saying that maybe it’s a bit far-fetched that Tottenham should win the

Champions League, but I disagree, I think they’ve got the players to beat anyone on their day.

“If it’s far-fetched for Tottenham to win the Champions League, how far-fetched would it be if their feeder club won the Champions League – and that’s Ajax.

“At the beginning of the season, if you said you’re going to play a two-legged semi-final against Ajax to get into the final of the Champions League, they would have ripped your hands off!

“The objective at the start of every season is to finish in the top four and yes it would be nice to win a domestic cup, so to win the Champions League would be a dream.

“But, they’ve got a chance. They’re playing against Ajax who are their feeder club, let’s face it. They’ve got four of their former players in Tottenham’s side.

“Ajax have done brilliantly, they’re a great young side and they’re showing up a lot of the Premier League with the way they’re going about it and the philosophy of their football club, but you’d have to say Tottenham have got to be favourites over two legs.

“I expect them to hit the ground running tonight and take the game to Ajax.

“You would have to say, for both of these teams, this is going to be their best chance ever to get to a Champions League final.

“It’a a massive game, the biggest game of those young lads’ lives.

“But, a bit like Liverpool last night, every wrote Tottenham off in the group stage. Everyone thought they were dead, they were dead against Manchester City at 95 minutes and VAR saved them, and now everyone is writing them off again.

“I believe they will go to the final and play Liverpool.”
