Newcastle takeover news: Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed ‘wants to replace Rafa Benitez’ with either Jose Mourinho or Arsene Wenger

Rafa Benitez could reportedly be axed by Newcastle’s new owners if the takeover is completed.

Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed and his billionaire Bin Zayed group have been trying to buy the Premier League club from current owner Mike Ashley for £350million.

It is reportedly only a matter of time before the deal goes through but he is not believed to have provided proof of funds.

Benitez is a popular figure with Newcastle fans though and any decision to remove him may not go down well.

The Mirror report that the Abu Dhabi based group have their own managerial targets, with Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger top of the list.

Benitez’s current contract with the Magpies runs out at the end of this month and talks with Ashley over a new deal are understood to have been put on hold while the takeover discussions are going on.

The 59-year-old took over as manager in March 2016 but could not stop them from getting relegated.

He took them back up to the Premier League the next season by winning the Championship and has guided them to safety in the last two seasons.
