Bayern Munich 5-0 Borussia Dortmund: Bavarians seize back control in Bundesliga title race with emphatic thrashing

Bayern Munich thrashed Borussia Dortmund 5-0 to take over top spot in the Bundesliga.

The 100th league instalment of ‘Der Klassiker’ was a one-sided affair as Mats Hummels, Robert Lewandowski, Javi Martinez and Sergio Gnabry had Bayern in dreamland before the break.

Bayern are not going to give up their title without a fight

Bayern are not going to give up their title without a fight

Lewandowski put the gloss on the rout with Bayern’s fifth in the final minute and the German champions are now in pole position to reclaim their title.

Bayern were nine points adrift of Dortmund in December, but the Bavarians are now one point clear of their rivals with six games of the season remaining.

Lewandowski’s first strike saw him become the fifth player in Bundesliga history to score 200 goals, and only former Bayern favourite Gerd Muller has reached the total quicker.

Dortmund had the perfect chance to shock Bayern within six minutes when Jacob Bruun Larsen and Marco Reus combined to set up Mahmoud Dahoud from 16 yards.

Hummels opened the scoring early on

Dahoud was unmarked and had the goal at his mercy, but he could only strike the outside of a post with the returning Manuel Neuer beaten in the Bayern goal.

It was to prove a costly miss as Bayern were ahead within four minutes as the former Dortmund defender Hummels headed home Thiago Alcantara’s corner.

Lewandowski, another former Dortmund player, doubled Bayern’s lead seven minutes later when he robbed the dawdling Dan-Axel Zagadou 30 yards out.

The Pole ran onto the loose ball and chipped it over the head of advancing goalkeeper Roman Burki to volley into an empty net.

Lewandowski bagged a brace against his old side

Lewandowski bagged a brace against his old side

It was a wonderful piece of opportunism and took Lewandowski level with Muller on 14 goals as the highest scorer in this fixture.

Lewandowski was denied the outright record instantly as Burki stood between further embarrassment for Dortmund.

Burki tipped a Thomas Muller header onto the crossbar and then denied Hummels and Lewandowski as Bayern threatened to score from every attack.

But Bayern’s third goal arrived after 41 minutes, Martinez sweeping home from the edge of the area after Burki had parried Thomas Muller’s close-range volley and Dortmund had failed to clear the danger.

Martinez found the net

The visitors were in disarray again two minutes later as Gnabry met Thomas Muller’s cross to score with a powerful downward header.

The second half lacked the intensity of the first period with both sides almost conserving their energies for the crucial games to come.

Gnabry fired wide as Bayern found late impetus and Lewandowski, at full stretch, sent his shot over the crossbar from six yards.

Gnabry added to the humiliation

Gnabry added to the humiliation

Lewandowski picked up a booking after being involved in a couple of heated incidents with Dortmund defenders, who seemed keen to rattle him.

But Lewandowski had the final word after he was denied by a brave block from substitute Julian Weigl.

Gnabry broke down the right for the umpteenth time and teed up Lewandowski, who had the simple task of finishing from a few yards out to become the highest scorer in ‘Der Klassiker’ history.

The 2018/19 Premier League season is done and dusted, with Manchester City’s 4-1 victory at Brighton on Sunday sealing them a second successive league title.

Part of the reason behind their success is, undoubtedly, their sharp-shooting forward line who are all accurate in front of goal, helping them to 94 goals.

United's massive 'rebuilding job'

United's massive 'rebuilding job'

BARCELONA ̢ۢ After their remote hopes of another improbable Champions League revival were stopped dead by Lionel Messi and a rampant Barcelona, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his Manchester United side have to undergo a huge overhaul to return to Europe's elite.
United tried in vain to summon up the spirit of 1999 at the same Nou Camp where they stunned Bayern Munich with a 2-1 comeback win in the Champions League final.
While they started the second leg of their quarter-final brightly, with Marcus Rashford hitting the bar, a pair of mistakes gave Messi the chance to put the Red Devils away.
Ashley Young, playing as left-back in place of the suspended Luke Shaw, gave the ball away for the first while David de Gea, United's player of the year four times in the past five years, let a tame effort slip under his hands.
Just like that, their hosts were out of sight 3-0 on Tuesday and 4-0 on aggregate, the first time United have lost by four or more goals in a two-legged European knockout tie.
Solskjaer said he knew all along "there is work to be done and the next few years are going to be massive to get to the level that Barcelona and other teams are at".
The Norwegian added: "We were fighting against a great team... but I've said all along this isn't going to change overnight.

START FROM SCRATCH
There is work to be done and the next few years are going to be massive to get to the level that Barcelona and other teams are at.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United manager, on the scale of the job at hand.

"We've good players to work with and, at the moment, we've done really well to get to the quarters and challenge for top four (in the Premier League). But we've got a rebuilding job. It starts with the coaches and players, and with one or two additions (in the summer).
"We're on with the job and have spoken to the players we need to get the best out of each other, create an environment of top-class attitude, world-class attitude every single day."
While he has restored United's confidence, which hit rock-bottom under Jose Mourinho, and has overseen an improvement in results in the four months since taking the job in December, the scale of the long-term surgery his side need was laid bare in Spain.
Barcelona, led by a brace from Messi and a fine curling strike from Philippe Coutinho, were dominant, with Solskjaer conceding he "could see the difference between the two teams".
His reasoning cut little ice with former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino, though, who felt that United's lack of character was apparent, with "no one performing to a standard anywhere near good enough to take on Barcelona".
But, while the pundit also reserved criticism for Paul Pogba for "playing his own kind of game", former United star Paul Scholes feels the France midfielder remains a player Solskjaer should retain and build his side around.
Meanwhile, United said yesterday they are investigating racist abuse directed at defender Young on social media after the loss to Barcelona.
The England international was targeted on Twitter after the 33-year-old full-back endured a disappointing night at the Nou Camp.
"Manchester United utterly condemns racist social media comments posted around yesterday's Champions League fixture," the club said in a statement.
"We are working to identify individuals involved and we will take the strongest possible action we can against them."

Arsenal news: Unai Emery’s astonishing record after 50 games at the Emirates shows just how good he’s been

Unai Emery took charge of his 50th Arsenal game on Thursday night as his side made it through to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Their 1-0 win at Napoli was enough to see them progress to the final four of the competition.

It has been a long season for the Gunners with at least seven games still to play, eight if they reach the Europa League final.

Unai Emery has won 32 games for Arsenal

Emery is starting to show his credentials as Arsenal manager and showing why they wanted him to replace Arsene Wenger last summer.

His side have won six of their last seven games and conceded just one goal in that time.

Emery has won 32 of his first 50 games in charge – the most by any Arsenal manager.

It is nine ahead of Wenger, who won 23 of his first 50 games.

George Allison is second on the list, with 28 wins, and he is their second longest serving manager who took charge for 13 years until 1947.

George Graham is third with 27 wins from his opening 50 matches.

Emery may feel those wins could be higher, though, as two of his defeats have come against Bate Borisov and Rennes.

The Gunners are also fourth in the Premier League with five games to go.

If Unai Emery can secure a top four finish and win the Europa League then it will no doubt be deemed a successful season.

Football: Fulham sunk by two own goals at Burnley

BURNLEY, England (REUTERS) - Burnley beat Fulham 2-1 at Turf Moor on Saturday (Jan 12) thanks to two own goals to make it three straight league wins for Sean Dyche's side and leave the visitors deep in relegation danger.
The Clarets won without a single shot of their own on target and rode their luck in a typical scrap between two teams fighting against the drop, played in cold, windy and wet conditions.
German international Andre Schurrle put Fulham, without an away win this season, ahead in brilliant fashion in the second minute, bringing down a long ball from Denis Odoi and blasting, first time, past Tom Heaton.
But Burnley got back on level terms in the 20th minute when Jeff Hendrick's low drive was turned into his own net by Fulham defender Joe Bryan.
Three minutes later and Hendrick had forced another own goal - his drive headed in by Odoi to put the Clarets 2-1 up.
Fulham defender Calum Chambers headed against the bar just before the break - a sign of what was to come from Claudio Ranieri's side in the second half.
Burnley defender James Tarkowski had to clear a Luciano Vietto drive off the line shortly after the interval and Fulham had most of the pressure after the break without creating many clear-cut chances.
Aside from some moments of quality from teenage winger Dwight McNeil, Burnley relied on hard work and long balls. The three points mean they move up to 15th place, while Fulham are next to bottom on 14 points, five points from safety.
"This period is very strange. We play well, we deserve minimum a draw," said Ranieri.
"The second half we play much better, move the ball quickly. They shoot at goal two or three times and one time they save on the line. These episodes change the music," added the Italian.
"There are good moments and bad moments. We never give up, we continue to believe that at the end we will be safe."
Dyche conceded his side had been lucky but felt they were due some good fortune.
"We have had a bit of luck today with the own goals but we haven't had much this season," he said.
The nine points from three games, including wins over West Ham and Huddersfield, has changed the mood at Turf Moor even if Dyche's side are still far from clear of trouble.
"It brings a feeling. There are no guarantees but it is a big shift for us. There is still more work to be done. Every game is important in the Premier League, no matter who you are playing. Usually you have to play on right until the last game," he said.
