Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona: Piers Morgan, Jamie Carragher and Danny Murphy rave about ‘greatest comeback in football history’

Jamie Carragher hailed LiverpoolĂ¢€™s stunning Champions League semi-final win over Barcelona as the clubĂ¢€™s greatest ever night at Anfield.

The Reds had an almost impossible task of overturning a 3-0 deficit from the first leg when they were beaten by a Lionel Messi brace and Luis Suarez’s lone goal.

However, doubles from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum gave Jurgen KloppĂ¢€™s men a 4-0 win on Tuesday night to book their place in next monthĂ¢€™s Champions League final.

Carragher, who was part of the Liverpool team that came from three goals down against AC Milan to win the Champions League final in 2005, could not contain his emotions on social media.

He wrote: Ă¢€Å“Greatest night ever at Anfield! #LIVBAR @ChampionsLeague.Ă¢€

Prior to the game, Barcelona had tweeted: Ă¢€Å“We score, Liverpool need FIVE – and we’re going to get at least one… agreed? #LFCBarĂƒ§a (1-0, agg 1-3).Ă¢€

And that tweet came back to haunt them as they were mocked by Liverpool fans at full-time.

Carragher quoted the tweet with the eyes emoji to poke fun at Barca, with the Reds instead progressing to play their second successive Champions League final.

Danny Murphy, another former Liverpool star, admitted he was emotional watching Liverpool pull off their remarkable comeback.

He told Sky Sports: “IĂ¢€™ve got goosebumps watching the celebrations. ItĂ¢€™s personal to me, I was there as a kid watching and been there as a player. It brings back a lot of memories.

Ă¢€Å“They achieved something insurmountable in many respects. They lost [Roberto] Firmino and [Mohamed] Salah, they were unlucky in the last game, [Manchester] City had won last night, how they picked themselves up to produce that energy and quality is amazing.

Ă¢€Å“The manager deserves great credit, the players deserve great credit, even the problems they had during the game with [James] Milner going to left-back.

Ă¢€Å“The initiative to get the winner from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Origi in such a frenetic situation, the calmness shown by that young man, what a player he is.

Ă¢€Å“It was a team performance that helped them get through, helped by a wonderful crowd and a wonderful atmosphere.

Ă¢€Å“We can eulogise about all those players because every single one of them was top draw, it was just sensational.Ă¢€

Arsenal fan Piers Morgan even paid tribute to LiverpoolĂ¢€™s heroes.

He tweeted: Ă¢€Å“INCREDIBLE!!!!!

Ă¢€Å“Congratulations Liverpool, greatest comeback in the history of football.

Ă¢€Å“3-0 down to the best team in the world, and you destroyed them 4-0 in the 2nd Leg.

Ă¢€Å“Astonishing. And wonderful.Ă¢€

Klopp, the Liverpool manager, could not contain his excitement after the victory – with the German actually swearing on live TV!

He defended himself by saying it is past 10 o’clock, before lauding his players as ‘f****** giants’.

“ItĂ¢€™s ten past ten, most of the children are probably in bed,” he said. “These boys are f****** giants.

“ItĂ¢€™s unbelievable. It is unbelievable. Fine me, fine me if you want.

“IĂ¢€™m not native, I donĂ¢€™t have better words for it. It is unbelievable.”
