Tottenham vs Liverpool: ‘Harry Kane should NOT start Champions League final even if he is fit’, says Glenn Hoddle

Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle believes Harry Kane should start on the bench in Saturday’s Champions League final, even if he is passed fit for the game.

Spurs flew to Madrid on Wednesday as they began their final preparations for this weekend’s all-English clash against Liverpool at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Harry Kane is back in first-team training for Tottenham after recovering from an ankle injury

Star striker Kane faces a race to be fit for the final having missed seven weeks of action with a ‘significant’ ankle ligament injury.

The England captain was ruled out of both of Tottenham’s miraculous European comebacks in the quarter-finals against Manchester City and semi-finals against Ajax.

He is now back in first-team training and this week declared himself fit and ‘ready to go’ for the final.

But Hoddle has urged Mauricio Pochettino NOT to start the hitman, as he believes Kane could be Tottenham’s secret weapon against Liverpool.

“I’m absolutely delighted that he’s fit, but I definitely wouldn’t start him,” the Spurs legend told White Hart Lane stadium announcer Paul Coyte on talkSPORT2.

“I think what a sight it would be for the Spurs fans and his team-mates if he’s there with half-an-hour to go and the game is hanging on an inch or is heading into extra-time.

“What a sight to see him come on with Lucas Moura and Heung-min Son if goals are needed and what a sight if they are hanging onto the game, because he can hold the ball up.

“The tempo of the game is going to be absolutely incredible at the beginning of the game, Liverpool like to press and play that high tempo, I don’t think he’ll be ready for that sort of pace.

“I really feel that once the game is settled in the second-half and he’s coming on fresh, I think that’s where he can have a real impact.

“Yeah, his ankle is feeling good and that’s great news, but he’s not 100 per cent match fit and we all know that.

“But it’s a great sign that he’s fit and it will give so much confidence to the other players, it really will.

“A 100 per cent fit Harry Kane starts, there’s no doubt about it, but at this moment in time I think he’ll be on the bench.”

Tottenham news: Mauricio Pochettino says talk of leaving can wait until after Champions League final vs Liverpool

Mauricio Pochettino believes it would be ’embarrassing’ to allow talk about his future as Tottenham manager to dominate the build-up to the Champions League final.

Pochettino has seen his position at the club the subject of much speculation, having himself hinted he might leave if his side beat Liverpool in Madrid on Saturday.

Pochettino says he is only focusing on beating Liverpool in Madrid on Saturday

He has been linked with the vacant managerial job at Juventus following the departure of Massimiliano Allegri, and was asked on Monday’s press conference whether he will move to Serie A next season, while he also floated the possibility of taking a sabbatical at the end of the season.

Whatever happens in the Spanish capital, Pochettino will sit down with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to discuss his future and which direction the club takes next.

But he is not willing to discuss anything until after the match with Liverpool.

“Today no one is more important than the game we have ahead,” he said.

“Tottenham deserve for us to be all 200 per cent focused on preparing in the best way for the game.

“We can make history, we can write our history and provide our fans and people and family with the best happiness in football.

“Today, to think about individual things is a little bit embarrassing and a shame.

“I am not important. What happens in the future with me – I think we have bigger things ahead to think about.

“To play the final of the Champions League, to play with all the emotions that this competition generates, I am nothing to worry about.

“I am not more important than the Champions League or the possibility to win a trophy, or the club.

“The rumours are out there. You ask about me but today the focus is 200 per cent on the final. Rumours are rumours and are there.

Pochettino is hugely popular with the fans, having been in charge of Spurs for five years

Pochettino is hugely popular with the fans, having been in charge of Spurs for five years

“After the final we will have time to talk. Today my commitment to Tottenham is 200 per cent.”

Pochettino is able to command interest from Juventus, Manchester United and Real Madrid because of the work he has done at Spurs.

Taking charge five years ago, he has transformed them into Champions League regulars and Premier League contenders. If the club beat Liverpool, they will become the sixth team to win the UEFA Cup/ Europa League, Cup Winners Cup and European Cup/ Champions League after Juventus, Ajax, Bayern, Chelsea and Manchester United.

To get to the biggest match in club football, Pochettino says, is a ‘massive achievement’.

“I was thinking today it was my best period here, today I signed a contract five years ago and this period is amazing for us,” he said.

“I think we have ahead one of the best games you can play. I think the World Cup final and the final of the Champions League are the two most important games you can play.

“It is a privilege to play in the Champions League final on Saturday and we are so lucky to have three weeks to prepare because we are enjoying every single day.

“I think when you look back all that transformation from the club, I think it was one of the areas to attack and improve.

“When you look back the amazing improvement of the club, from facilities and the mentality and the results to be here in the Champions League final.

“It is a massive, massive achievement for this club, working and developing a project that is completely different to other clubs who can achieve to be in a Champions League final.”

Spurs will not be favourites in the Spanish capital as they finished 26 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League table and lost both games 2-1.

The Argentine, though, insists nothing that has gone before will matter on Saturday.

“It is going to be a completely different game,” he said. “We cannot prepare thinking about a few months ago.

“When you play Premier League, or Carabao Cup or FA Cup the circumstances are completely different.

“That is why our focus is completely on ourselves. It is a team we know well and they know us well.

“But we didn’t prepare thinking of the game we played at Wembley or Anfield. It is Madrid. It would be a massive mistake to prepare like we played in the past.”

Chelsea vs Arsenal: The Blues academy stars who could be on the bench for Europa League final

New UEFA regulations mean both clubs will be able to name 12 substitutes for the Baku showpiece, as opposed to seven in the earlier stages of the tournament.

Maurizio Sarri faces an injury crisis ahead of the trip to Baku

The Blues have been hit with injuries to key players in the build up, with Antonio Rudiger, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek ruled out, while N’Golo Kante is fighting to be fit.

Chelsea will also be unable to use returning loan stars like Reece James and Trevor Chalobah due to UEFA restrictions, which also makes new signing Christian Pulisic ineligible.

Maurizio Sarri, therefore, could be forced to call on players who have never played for the club’s senior team in order to fill his bench for a European final.

talkSPORT.com takes a look at who they might be.

Conor Gallagher

Conor Gallagher, the 19-year-old midfielder, is probably the most likely player to get an opportunity.

He was recently named Academy Player of the Year and featured during Chelsea’s friendly against New England Revolution last week.

With Loftus-Cheek injured, Gallagher represents a natural replacement with his ability to drive from deep and score goals.

Luke McCormick would’ve challenged Gallagher for Player of the Year had it not been for a frustrating series of injuries throughout the season.

The 20-year-old partners Gallagher in midfield for the Under-23s and has been tipped as the next Frank Lampard.

He has trained with the senior squad on several occasions, so Sarri will know all about his potential.

Marc Guehi

Marc Guehi was the surprise name on the bench for Chelsea’s final Premier League game of the season against Leicester.

The 18-year-old defender has been a staple for the Under-23s this season and made headlines with his outrageous penalty in the UEFA Youth League, which you can watch above.

Billy Gilmour has enjoyed a breakthrough season with the Under-23s after stepping up from the Under-18s.

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder, who has been training with the first team, got five goals and four assists in the Premier League 2 this season.

He is highly thought of by Chelsea and Scotland after impressing for his country’s Under-19s.

Charlie Brown was the top scorer in the UEFA Youth League this season, in which Chelsea were beaten by Porto in the final.

The 19-year-old is considered the crown jewel of the Blues academy, and could become the next breakthrough star following the success of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Leeds United fan BREAKS ankle while celebrating Jack Harrison’s winning goal vs Sheffield Wednesday

A Leeds United fan somehow managed to break his ankle while celebrating Jack Harrison’s winning goal against Sheffield Wednesday – and then shared the pictures on social media!

Harrison’s strike was enough to separate the sides at Elland Road, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side moving back into the Championship’s top two with just four matches left to play.

The crowds went crazy when Harrison found the back of the net in the second half, and there was incredible footage taken of a blind woman’s guide dog celebrating the goal at Elland Road.

While that sight was remarkably heartwarming, the following pictures learn more towards the gruesome side of things.

One supporter, Matt Richardson, ended up breaking his ankle while celebrating Harrison’s strike – and he even had to go to hospital!
